Creating Cinematic Characters with The Script Lab

Characters are the life blood of good fiction and this is a very interesting post from lovely people at The Script Lab. It has huge resonance for novelists, so is well worth a read, and more importantly contains some great links to The Script Lab resources like a rather cool character questionnaire.

For anyone contemplating writing a screenplay, The Script Lab have some amazing resources, with LOTS of tips in their ‘How to Write a Screenplay’ section. For anyone who has an idea and wants to pitch it to TV, and wants to know just how you do that, check out Inkwell’s Writing TV Treatments online workshop with Caren Kennedy who has sold her story to Warner Bros TV and knows exactly how to do it.

So how do you create cinematic characters? The Script Lab say:

“There are plenty of ways to go about exploring and creating characters: using a questionnaire, doing exercises, or even literal role-playing. This early research and discovery process may seem overwhelming at first, but it’s a necessary key to a successful screenplay. Even if you have the greatest high concept idea ever to smack Hollywood in the face, you still need to bring it to life with interesting, memorable, and – if you’re doing your job right – cinematic characters.
